Tips for Creating Midjourney Prompts for Coloring Pages
There are a few key tricks you can leverage in Midjourney to generate consistent high-quality coloring book pages.
Coloring Book Terminology
Making sure you use the correct terminology and phrases in your coloring book prompts is important.
Give the following list a run through and append the appropriate terms to the end of your prompts. The terms you choose to use will depend on the style of coloring book pages you want to create!
Simple outlines
Bold lines
Black and white drawings
Thick contours
Uncluttered designs
Easy-to-color shapes
Cartoon-style illustrations
Whimsical characters
Basic geometric shapes
Large coloring areas
Simplistic details
Kid-friendly imagery
Line art
Flat designs (no shading)
Connect-the-dots
Symmetrical patterns
Repetitive elements
Consider adding a few of these to your prompts to further refine your generated images.
Stylize
The stylize parameter in Midjourney controls how heavily the Midjourney aesthetic is applied. Low stylization values produce images that closely match the prompt but are less artistic.
When putting together Midjourney prompts for coloring, I’ve found that a low Stylize parameter works really well for reducing detail. Unlike poster prompts or other generations where you want additional creative detail, coloring pages benefit from less style.
You’ll want to lower the stylize value if your coloring book pages are coming out with too much detail or shading.
The default stylize value is 100. To reduce it, you can either use the slider found in the Aesthetics menu (in the web app), or append the following to your coloring book prompts:
--s [value] OR --stylize [value]
Here’s an example for clarity. The first image is uses a low stylize value of 40, the second uses a the maximum value of 1,000.
You can see how a low Stylize parameter generates much better coloring book pages. ✅
Another trick is to use style raw, which I wrote more about here.
Aspect Ratio
Depending on your needs, you might want to change the aspect ratios of your Midjourney prompts for coloring.
To change the aspect ratio, use the slider in the Image Size menu (web app), or append the following to your coloring book prompts:
--ar [desired aspect ratio]
Common aspect ratios for coloring book page prompts are:
Vertical: 3:4
Square: 1:1
Landscape: 16:9
Negative Prompting
Negative prompting in Midjourney allows you to specify items or characteristics that you don’t want to see.
I’ve found with coloring page prompts, it’s helpful to add a negative prompt to remove shading. To do this, you can append the following syntax to your prompts:
--no shade, shading, detail, details, line shading
You’ll want to use negative prompting if you’re seeing images with too much shading!
