Submagic Review: How I Made a YouTube Short With Submagic

What better way to review Submagic than to actually use it to add captions to an original YouTube Short!?

In this article, I’ll walk you through the entire process of using Submagic to create captions on a YouTube Short so you can see exactly how it works.

Heads up: Submagic has added a lot of features since I took these screenshots, so your editor will look a bit different, but the workflow is still upload, tweak and export.

Step 1 - Sign Up

Head over to Submagic and sign up.

You can try it free on three short videos before you commit, though exports carry a Submagic watermark until you subscribe.

When I signed up, the Basic plan (monthly) got you 20 videos per month for $20.

Trust me when I say: When you see how much time Submagic saves in video editing and manually adding captions, $1 per video is excellent value.

The plans have changed since that screenshot. Here’s what Submagic charges now:

• Starter: $19 a month, or $12 a month billed yearly, for 15 videos a month up to 2 minutes long, exported in 1080p.
• Pro: $39 a month, or $23 a month billed yearly, for 40 videos a month up to 5 minutes long, plus Storyblocks B-roll and auto zooms.
• Business: $69 a month, or $41 a month billed yearly, for 100 videos a month up to 30 minutes long, with 4K exports at 60fps.

The entry plan was enough for me, but if you plan on doing more than 15 videos a month, or anything longer than 2 minutes, step up to Pro.

Step 2 - Upload Your Video File

Let's get into the fun stuff - it's a game changer.

Drag and drop your video content into Submagic to get started with the upload.

Once the video file uploads, Submagic's artificial intelligence wastes no time and begins transcribing audio straight away.

Step 3 - Tweak Your Captions

I'm not lying when I say, I'm really impressed with the captioning process.

Straight outta the box, Submagic's AI intelligently highlighted keywords and generated accurate captions with relevant emojis. ✅

There were a few minor changes I made to the words but that was the only changes needed to the subtitle animations!

To give you an example, at one point the AI mistook the word 'Elon' for 'long'... but that could have been my muffled voice's fault! 🤣

From there, I played around with the 8 caption styles available at the time.

I was tossing up between Hormozi and Devin style but ended up going with 'Hormozi2' captions.

It's at this time you can use the AI tools to tweak the caption colors, size, and Y position too.

Another great feature of Submagic is the static caption and hashtag generator in the third column.

Submagic automatically generated the static caption below. I'll use it for my YouTube Shorts upload!

Step 4 - Save and Export

We're done already! Save your project and click export.

Video editors reading this should know how simple this is compared to manually creating captions in Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve.

The export took a minute or two, and Submagic emailed me when it was complete - super handy.

The finished Short came out with captions that punch up the key points, which is exactly what you want for viewer engagement.
